While AI may seem straight out of a Black Mirror episode, this blog aims to demystify it and provide tips on how nonprofits can utilize these tools.

What is AI?

So, what is it? To put it plainly, it’s a technology that enables computers and machines to simulate human intelligence and problem-solving capabilities. AI mimics human intelligence to perform tasks and can even improve itself based on the information it collects from various sources.

Important key subsets of AI include:

  • Machine Learning (ML): As defined by, Arthur Samuel it's “the field of study that gives computers the ability to learn without explicitly being programmed.”
  • Natural Language Processing (NLP): Enables machines to understand and respond in a human-like manner.
  • Robotic Process Automation (RPA): Automates repetitive tasks that follow predefined rules

To get started, consider checking out OpenAIs chatbot, ChatGPT, and asking…well, anything! The important thing is to get a feel for how it works. For example, I could write “Plan 5 vegetarian recipes I can make in under 30 minutes." ChatGPT will provide that information almost instantaneously back to me in the chat. However, this tool can be far better utilized, and geared towards your needs.

How can AI help your nonprofit?

AI can be used to support your nonprofit in many different ways. It’s important to strategize where you think you can best utilize it, whether that's with fundraising, volunteer management, or program delivery. You may want to start small and work from there.

Here are a few ideas on how to utilize AI at your nonprofit:

Fundraising Optimization: Fundraising is essential for any nonprofit. AI can analyze donor data to identify patterns and predict which donors are likely to contribute, how much, and when. This allows nonprofits to target their fundraising efforts more effectively

Improving SEO: AI tools can analyze search engine data to identify relevant keywords and trends, helping nonprofits improve their search engine optimization (SEO). SEO works to rank an organization's website or content higher in the search results, increasing visibility and attracting more visitors.

Content Creation and Curation: AI can assist in content creation by generating ideas for posts, helping to draft text, and even creating visuals. Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools can write blog posts, social media updates, and newsletters, saving time and ensuring consistency in messaging. Of course, you may want to add a touch of your nonprofit's writing style to produce cohesive content.

Many different AI tools can help with areas of focus such as donor relations, social media, marketing, and more! For example, for design, Canva’s Magic Studio, for social media presence, Buffer, and for fundraising, DonorSearch to name a few. Check out this great list of AI tools HERE by Momentum to spark additional ideas. Keep in mind, that while some AI tools are free or offer a free plan, others require a paid subscription. It’s important to consider what would make the most sense for your operations and where you want to invest your energy or your budget.

Conclusion

AI isn't going anywhere, so we must consider how to best leverage this tool to ease workloads. While AI could never replace the hard work of a dedicated person, it sure could make a great sidekick, and open up more possibilities and capacity at your nonprofit.
